Linen care mistakes everyone makes at home
let's fix them
We see it all the time: Linen that could last years but a few common mistakes cut their lifespan short or your inventory low. That’s why we’re sharing our insider secrets with you! Taking care of linen can be hard, that’s why we want you to get the most out of every thread.
1. Storage & handling
During storage UV rays weaken fibers and cause fading. Sun damaged linen feels different to the touch, it loses its softness and durability becoming rough and prone to tearing. Opt for a storage solution away from direct sunlight.

Choose breathable storage containers
- Cedar chests, cotton bags, or well ventilated closets work best. Avoid plastic bags which can trap moisture and lead to mildew.
Maintain proper humidity
- Aim for 30-50% humidity. Too dry and the fibers become brittle, too moist and you risk mold and mildew
Use lavender sachets
- Natural deterrent for moths and other pests that can damage natural fibers, plus it keeps linen smelling fresh.
2. Rotate sheet sets in thirds
USE ONE SET
WASH ONE SET
REST ONE SET
Why this works
The rest period allows for fibers to recover from stress of washing and use. Cotton and linen fibers actually benefit from this downtime, helping maintain their structure and softness longer.
Implementation tips
- Label your sets (for example, A,B,C) to track rotation easily
- Keep a simple log or use your phone to remind you which set is next
- Consider having seasonal sets – lighter weaves for summer, heavy for winter
- If budget allows, invest in 4 sets for even longer rest periods

3. AVOIDING PILLING
Use cold water rather than hot. How water loosens fibers and makes the more likely to break and pill. Cold water is gentler and just as effective for cleaning.
Why not hot water?
Hot water causes natural fibers to swell and contract rapidly, weakening the fiber structure. Traditionally hot water was used to kill of any germs and bacteria however modern detergents are formulated to work effectively at lower temperatures.

Anti-pilling strategies
Separate by fabric weight
Don’t wash delicate linen with heavy items like jeans or towels.
Use a gentle cycle
Reduces agitation that can cause fibers to break and pill.
Fill the machine properly
Overloading creates excessive friction, underloading allows too much agitation.
Choose the right detergent
Enzyme based detergents work better in cold water and are gentler on fibers.
